Honeymoon in Greece

Smiles never left our faces throughout our 12-day Honeymoon in Greece (as you can probably tell from our photos)! Our adventure began in-air, as we traveled in comfy Business Class from Chicago to Amsterdam to Athens. We both agreed … this is the best way to travel abroad! (Thanks to our fabulous travel advisor, Sharon, for arranging this for us!)

Following a quick 24-hours in Athens, which included a sunset dinner with views of the Acropolis and a morning hike to the Parthenon, we set-off on our first island destination — Santorini!

Oia is a picturesque village on Santorini that is situated on the northwestern tip of the island. It boasts spectacular sunset views that make you feel like you’re stepping into a postcard— Narrow streets, porcelain-blue domed buildings, and sun-bathed verandas. We stayed at Perivolas Lifestyle Houses where we were warmly welcomed with a bottle of Mezzo upon our arrival.  The staff and service was truly top-notch! Charming suites built into the side of the cliff with private entries and terraces made us feel like we staying at our own estate versus a traditional hotel. The location was perfectly situated just a short walk from the main strip of Oia, and provided stunning sunset and caldera views and a quiet setting.

After four nights in Oia, we took the high-speed ferry to Mykonos. Mykonos, unlike Santorini, is known for its lively beaches and party-scene atmosphere.  Sharon booked us a beautiful suite at the Myconian Ambassador Relais & Chateaux property which overlooks Platis Gialos beach.  The hotel and staff were wonderful, and several great restaurants and beaches were just a short walk away.  It was the perfect place to spend the second half of our honeymoon as we were craving a bit more adventure.

Reflecting on our trip of a lifetime, here are a few of our top tips to make the most of your Grecian adventure should you decide to visit this fabulous destination:

  1. Get out on the water! We took two sailing trips, one off of each island, which offered different views and perspectives. From a day trip to a sunset sail … you can’t go wrong!

  1. Eat, drink & enjoy! Fresh vegetables (best salads I’ve ever tasted), seafood (right out of the sea, literally) and feta cheese … YUM! The flavor of Greek food differs based on the season and geography, and unlike other cuisines, the Mediterranean diet is light so you don’t feel as guilty indulging. Greek wines are also quite underrated — Varietals like Assyrtiko and Nykteri are dry, crisp, and refreshing.

  1. Pause and take a moment to relax! While it is certainly easy to spend all day exploring (like when my husband talked me into ATV-ing in Mykonos), be sure to take a moment to soak in the culture and views. Spend time talking to some of the island’s residents — Everyone we met could not have been nicer or more welcoming!

Thank you, Sharon, and Avant Travel, for helping us plan and enjoy the perfect honeymoon!!

… Now, what are YOU waiting for? The Greek Islands are waiting for you!
